How to Create Smoky Eyes

Smoky eyes are ultra sultry and great for nights out on the town. However, it is not a pretty sight when smoky eyes go wrong. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could end up looking more raccoon than fox. Here’s your step by step guide for mastering sexy smoky eyes.

Step 1: Prep

Apply a cream concealer over the eyelids to create a smooth base for your eyeshadow .

Step 2: Line

Use a dark eyeliner pencil (black or dark grey is best) to line the upper lashes from the inside corner to the outside corner. Then, use the same pencil to dot between your lower lashes (the key here is to fill in the blanks, not to outline completely). Smudge both lash lines with a cotton swab or eyeliner brush .

Step 3: Powder

Sweep powder shadow (avoid black and go for brown ,dark green ,dark navy ,grey or dark purple ) on your lids and into the crease between your eye and eyebrow. Blend the shadow up and outwards (think Cleopatra but toned down and blended) rather than blending in a downward direction. If you want your smoky eyes to last the whole day, apply a cream shadow before the powder shadow. Wait five minutes to make sure it is dry, then sweep a powder shadow on in the same shade.

Step 4: Lighter Powder

Sweep loose powder in a neutral shade that matches your skin tone above the crease and just below your eyebrow.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Sweep on 2-3 coats of black mascara . Use an eyelash curler to look ultra feminine. Make sure the rest of your makeup is toned down. Keep lips pale with a clear lip gloss at the very most. Use a cream blush in a natural shade if you need some extra colour on your cheeks. Avoid smoky eyes during early mornings or if you didn’t get much sleep. Dark eyeshadow can bring out bags and lines under your eyes, so rest up the night before!

There are so many different types of makeup brushes out there that can help you look your very best, yet many women don’t know how to use half of them. Just like a painter, you have to know when to use what brush. Do you need every single type of makeup brush? No, unless you are a makeup artist or really enjoy experimenting with makeup. We’re here to fill you in on some of the basic types of makeup brushes.

Tips

Quality varies from brand to brand. Usually more expensive brushes are of better quality, but even lower quality brushes do the job for the average lady on an average day.

There are many different types of handles out there, so you may be confused on which type to choose. The main thing that matters about handles is how it feels to you. Get one that feels comfortable and is easy to hold and control.

If you are traveling a lot, look for brushes with shorter handles.

Bristles come in two types: natural and synthetic. Natural bristles come from animal hair. If you use a lot of loose powders, natural bristles are your best choice. Synthetic bristles are less expensive but can be equal in quality to natural bristles. Synthetic bristles are not made from animal hair, making it a good choice for vegans. They are also the best choice for apply creamy eyeshadow ,creamy blush , and lipstick.

Powder Brush

This large, loose brush is used for sweeping powder over the entire face.
It can be used with bronzers, shimmers, and powders.
Great for cleaning up excess powder after using a powder puff .

Blush Brush

This large brush is similar to the powder brush.
It’s perfect for apply blush. Some even are angled to help apply blush to the cheekbones.
Great for cleaning up excess blush.

Fan Brush

This lighter brush is also used to apply blush.
Sweep across cheekbones for a light touch of colour.

Concealer Brush

Though not used too often, some people purchase separate concealer brushes to ensure precise application of concealer.

Eye Makeup Brushes

A soft, rounded brush that resembles a small blush brush.
Great for apply powder eyeshadow to the eyelids.

Crease Brush

This have a finer tip than a normal eye shadow brush.
It’s perfect for applying darker colours to the crease between the eyelid and browbone. It’s also perfect for blending!

Liner Brush

These are perfect for liquid eyeliner.
These extremely fine-tipped brushes can also apply powder eyeshadow mixed with water to the lash lines for a cool effect.

Smudge Brush

A brush with very short, stubby bristles.
The name says it all — it is used to smudge liner and shadow to give a smoky look.

Brow Brush

This angled, slightly stiff brush is perfect for applying makeup to the eyebrows.
Many people find this brush a versatile tool for other jobs, such as applying lipstick.

Lip Brushes

Lip Brush

Use to apply lipsticks, lip glosses, and lip stains for a flawless pout.
Your basic lip brush is a bit on the stiff side for applying creamy lipsticks.

Travel Lip Brush

For applying lipstick on the go.
